Such is the heartbreaking tale of Rooney, a 7-year-old pup who had spent the entirety of his life in the comfort and security of a loving home. But just as he celebrated his 7th birthday, Rooney’s world came crashing down when his family made the cruel decision to surrender him to a local shelter, citing their impending arrival of a new baby as the reason.

“Dogs can smell the fear in the building, they can smell the [euthanasia] of dogs that have to be euthanized due the incredible lack of space that every single shelter is dealing with,” the Lone Star Dog Ranch & Dog Ranch Rescue team lamented, painting a harrowing picture of the distress and uncertainty Rooney must have faced in his newfound environment.
Suddenly thrust into the unknown, this once-beloved companion found himself surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of a shelter, his cries for his family echoing through the halls. When Ricky, an employee of the Dog Ranch Rescue in Anna, Texas, arrived at the shelter to collect Rooney, the staff was already in the throes of a tempestuous emotional response. Scooping the dejected pup into his arms, Ricky whisked him away to the rescue’s premises, where the staff’s initial sadness quickly morphed into unbridled fury.
“I am so sick and tired of people ‘getting rid of their dogs’ because you had a baby, a change in your life, blah blah blah blah blah…” the rescue’s Facebook post read, the intensity of their words a testament to the depth of their outrage.

Addressing Rooney’s former owners directly, the post laid bare the staff’s anguish, their words a searing indictment of the callousness that had led to this beloved companion’s abandonment.
“I always wonder did it make you feel bad while you stood in line? did you look back at him when you walked away, did you see his face asking you what the hell? did you forget about him 5 minutes later? 10 minutes maybe?” they demanded, their righteous anger palpable.
Yet, despite their seething emotions, the Dog Ranch Rescue team remained steadfast in their commitment to Rooney, welcoming him with open arms and vowing to find him the loving, permanent home he so deserved – a home that would never betray him as his previous family had.
