Butch, a gruff-looking Rottweiler with a heart of gold, leaned wearily against a lamppost. Snowflakes swirled around him, blanketing the deserted street in a thick white layer. He shivered, his breath misting in the frigid air.
Butch wasn’t supposed to be out here. He belonged to a kind family who lived in a cozy house a few blocks away. But a couple of days ago, he’d chased after a runaway squirrel and gotten lost in the blizzard.
Hunger gnawed at his belly, and his paws were numb from the cold. Butch whimpered, his tail drooping between his legs. Just when he thought he couldn’t take another step, a flicker of movement caught his eye.

A small, shivering form huddled beneath a park bench. As Butch approached cautiously, he realized it was a lost puppy – a black and white Australian Shepherd mix, no bigger than a shoebox.
The puppy whimpered when it saw Butch, but it didn’t try to run. Butch nudged the puppy gently with his nose, a silent question in his gaze. The puppy licked Butch’s nose in reply, its tail thumping weakly against the ground.
Butch knew what he had to do. He nudged the puppy again, this time towards a large oak tree with a hollowed-out base. It wasn’t much shelter, but it was better than nothing. Butch curled up next to the puppy, offering him warmth and comfort.
The next morning, the storm had passed, and a ray of sunlight peeked through the clouds. A young boy bundled up in a winter coat spotted the two dogs huddled beneath the oak tree. He gasped, his eyes widening at the sight of the shivering puppy.
“Oh, poor thing!” the boy cried, rushing towards the dogs. Butch whined and licked the puppy’s face, nudging him closer to the boy. The boy knelt down, his heart melting at the sight of the two lost souls.
“Come here, little guy,” he said softly, extending his hand. The puppy crawled out from under the tree and licked the boy’s fingers. The boy scooped him up in his arms, his wet fur clinging to the boy’s clothes.
Butch barked happily and wagged his tail. The boy looked at Butch, then back at the puppy.
“Are you two together?” he asked.
Butch barked again, nudging the boy’s hand with his nose. The boy smiled.
“Well, you both look like you could use a home,” he said. “Come on, let’s get you something to eat.”
The boy wrapped the puppy in his jacket and followed Butch out of the park. He didn’t know where the day would lead, but he was determined to help these two lost dogs find their way home, or perhaps, create a new home together.
