While riding his bike to a basketball game, Jace, a kindhearted man, stumbled upon a sight that would forever alter the course of a small dog’s life. Tucked away on the side of the road, he spotted a pup in a state of utter distress, her little body marred by visible wounds.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Jace knew he had to act, but being unable to rescue the canine immediately, he sprang into action, making a series of phone calls that would ultimately bring the Mission Pawsible animal rescue team to the dog’s aid.

As the rescuers approached the frightened pup, she made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with these strangers, her instincts to protect herself kicking into high gear. Undeterred, the team set about investigating the dog’s situation, horrified to discover that she did, in fact, have an owner – one who had woefully failed in their duty of care.
“She was once a stunning western breed puppy but she wasn’t maintained to the standard of care these animals require so today she is covered in dreadlocks, ticks, fleas and is fearful of most people. This is why people need to be educated around pet care – both physically and mentally.”
Coaxing the pup into their custody proved challenging, but eventually, the ‘owner’ arrived and managed to secure a leash around her. Witnessing the profound distress and confusion in the dog’s eyes as she was removed from the only person she knew was a heartbreaking experience for the rescuers.
“The sadness and confusion in Lexie’s eyes was heartbreaking. Removing owned animals from their humans is truly a horrible experience. She may have dreadlocks and been neglected but she still loves that man.”
Transported to a veterinary clinic, the dog, now named Lexie, was able to receive the care and attention she so desperately needed, enjoying a much-needed haircut and a delicious meal. With her physical condition assessed, the staff took heart in the fact that her injuries were relatively minor, turning their focus to the task of helping Lexie overcome the emotional trauma she had endured.
“Unfortunately, she was still heartbroken and a bit depressed, but the staff at the veterinary clinic made it clear that she could push through her sadness and learn to trust once again.”
Lexie’s salvation came in the form of a foster home – or rather, a forever home – as Michellina Suminto, a woman searching for a companion for her existing canine, fell head over heels for the fluffy pup the moment she laid eyes on her.
“Thankfully, Lexie found a new home quickly, and her new mom was an ideal match for her.”
In the care of her devoted new family, Lexie blossomed, her once-matted coat transforming into a lush, fluffy frame that only enhanced her inherent beauty. Alongside her adoptive brother, Edison, Lexie’s journey of trust and healing accelerated, her brave spirit shining through as she left the shadows of her past behind.
“She is such a brave girl now, I am so proud of her,” Michellina told The Dodo.
