The video footage, posted on BNSF Railway’s YouTube channel, captures the moving moment as the dispatcher delivers Faust’s final radio call. “K-9 partner Faust just completed his last shift after serving as an Explosions detection and police service canine for eight years and one day, and he is now officially retired. Faust, thank you for your service to the BNSF Railway, the communities you’ve served, and most importantly, for serving and protecting your handler. Now, we wish you a well, healthy, and happy retirement. Radio clear.”

As the words echo through the squad car, Faust’s whimpers can be heard, and his handler, Bryan Schaffer, is visibly overcome with emotion. With a melancholic expression, Schaffer leans in to give Faust a tender kiss, the bond between the two partners palpable in this poignant moment.

In a heartfelt farewell post on Facebook, Schaffer expressed his deep gratitude and admiration for his canine companion. “Faust, thank you for all the good you have done for BNSF and other agencies – but mostly I thank you for getting us both home safe after every shift,” he wrote. “He is now officially a part of our family,” Schaffer concluded, as Faust embarked on the next chapter of his life in retirement.

Sadly, Faust’s story would take a bittersweet turn three years later, when the beloved K-9 officer passed away in 2020 at the age of 13. But to Schaffer, Faust was far more than just a partner – he was a cherished companion, a confidant, and a constant source of strength. “The connection between Faust and me was unlike anything I’ve had with any other dog. He saw me at my best and my worst. He saw me laugh and cry. I spent more time with him than with my own family. We just had something special,” Schaffer reflected.

Faust’s impeccable work ethic, his unwavering courage, bravery, enthusiasm, and infectious spirit had set the standard for all those who served alongside him. In recognition of his exceptional service, Faust was posthumously inducted into the We Ride to Provide (WRTP) Hall of Fame, a testament to the lasting legacy he had left behind.

Though Faust may be gone, his memory will continue to inspire and captivate all who hear his story – a tale of loyalty, dedication, and the unbreakable bond between a fearless K-9 officer and the human who cherished him as family. Faust’s final radio call may have been the end of an era, but his spirit will undoubtedly live on, guiding and protecting those he served for generations to come.
