“Once the humane society looks at him, we’ll have a better idea of whether he’s suffered any infections or serious injuries,” explained Officer Douglas Bell. “Once we’re able to interview the owner and know the dog’s condition, we’ll have a better idea of what we might charge them with.”

The investigation quickly uncovered the grim details – the building had been foreclosed and vacant for many months, leaving the poor pup trapped and alone for an unimaginably long time. Under Maine’s animal cruelty laws, the former owner now faced the prospect of steep fines and even potential jail time.
The Caribou Police Department wasted no time in bringing the perpetrator to justice, announcing on their Facebook page that the cruel owner had been charged with Animal Cruelty, a class D misdemeanor.
The individual now faced a maximum penalty of up to 364 days in jail and a fine of no less than $500, as well as a court-imposed ban on possessing any animals in the future.
