It was a scene that would break anyone’s heart. A stray dog lay exhausted on a cardboard sheet in the middle of a city street. Next to her were six tiny newborn puppies.
The dog mom had been abandoned by her previous owners while pregnant. With nowhere else to go as labor started, she had given birth right there on the cold hard ground.
Two of her puppies didn’t make it. The dog was starving and severely dehydrated from the difficult delivery. But as soon as people approached, her motherly instincts kicked in. Though frail, she bared her teeth to protect her babies, not realizing they were there to help.
Rescuers Rush to Save Dog Family

An animal rescue team had been alerted to the stray dog in labor. They knew they had to act fast to save the lives of the mother and her four tiny puppies. It took three attempts as the protective mom lunged and snapped at them. But finally, they were able to safely capture the dog family.
At the shelter, it was clear just how dire the situation had been. The mama dog ravenously ate three huge meals in a row, devouring nearly 5 pounds of liver! She was that starved. Her ribs poked through her furry body. Thankfully, she had enough milk to continue nursing her babies.

For the first 48 hours, the rescuers weren’t sure if the puppies would survive. But with their mom’s milk and round-the-clock care, the little ones pulled through. One by one, their eyes opened to take in the world. The pups were tiny but growing stronger every day.
Their mom was still very skittish around humans, which was understandable after all her trauma. But in time, with patience and care from the shelter staff, her walls would slowly start to come down. This little family had been given a new lease on life, all thanks to the kindness of the rescue team.
The Stray Animal Crisis

Sadly, this dog’s harrowing story is just one of millions playing out every day on city streets around the world. Stray and abandoned animals struggle to survive, starving, dehydrated, and scared. Without access to food, water, and veterinary care, many pregnant moms and newborn litters don’t make it.
While rescue organizations work tirelessly, they can’t possibly save every stray. But we can all play a small part in combating this crisis. Donating just a few dollars provides meals for hungry strays. Volunteering at a local shelter or participating in trap-neuter-return programs makes a big difference.
Every act of compassion brings more stray animals in from the streets and into loving homes where they belong. One day, with enough helping hands, we can ensure no dog mom has to endure giving birth in such misery again.
