Help Me, Please

For countless days, this tiny, forlorn puppy lay abandoned in a ditch, her small, vulnerable form barely discernible amidst the debris. Scared, hungry, and in unbearable pain, she wondered endlessly why someone had so heartlessly discarded her, leaving her to fend for herself against the unforgiving elements. The questions that tormented her young mind – “Why did you get me if you weren’t going to love me? Why am I hungry? Why am I in a ditch? Why is everything hurting?” – echoed with each labored breath, a lament for the comfort and care she so desperately craved.
Yet, in her darkest hour, just when all hope seemed lost, a glimmer of salvation appeared in the form of a compassionate soul. The founder of the North Carolina-based “Ruby and Laurel Animal Rescue, Inc.,” Margaret Hamilton, was walking down the road when she spotted a tiny, white head poking out of the ditch – a sight that would forever alter the course of this puppy’s life.
The Road To Recovery

As Margaret crouched down to get a closer look, the overwhelming stench of the puppy’s mangy skin hit her. The poor creature had clearly endured unimaginable hardships, her fragile body bearing the scars of neglect and suffering. Yet, despite the overwhelming adversity she had faced, the puppy still found the strength to crawl out of the ditch and into Margaret’s outstretched arms, a testament to the resilience that burned within.
“This baby has seen the worst of humans, but still belly crawled out of the ditch and into my arms,” Margaret wrote on TikTok. “She goes in first thing tomorrow for medical treatment and vaccines.”

In the safety of Margaret’s care, the puppy, now named Slurpee, began her long journey to recovery. Trimming her overgrown nails and administering a medicated bath, Margaret tended to the puppy’s ailments, which included a sunburned and painful demodectic mange-ravaged skin. The next day, a visit to the veterinary clinic confirmed that while Slurpee was heartworm-negative, she would require medication to treat her ringworm and mange.
Despite the challenges that lay ahead, Slurpee’s resilience shone through, her little personality blossoming with each passing day. “Slurpee is feeling better by the day and we are already seeing improvements on her skin condition,” Margaret wrote. “Demodectic mange looks scary but is not contagious.”
A New Lease on Life
In a matter of mere weeks, the transformation in Slurpee has been nothing short of remarkable. From the emaciated, neglected waif found in the ditch, she has blossomed into a happy, healthy pup, her spirit rekindled by the love and care she has received. While the pain of her past may never fully fade, Slurpee’s future now brims with promise, a testament to the power of compassion and the unwavering resilience of the human-animal bond.
As Slurpee continues on her path to recovery, the team at Ruby and Laurel Animal Rescue remains steadfast in their commitment to providing her with the resources and support she needs to thrive. For those inspired by Slurpee’s story, the opportunity to contribute to her care and the vital work of the rescue can be found through their GoFundMe page, a chance to pay forward the kindness that saved this once-forsaken puppy from a life of unimaginable hardship.
