In 2016, a young German Shepherd puppy named Gavel seemed poised to join the ranks of Queensland’s elite K-9 unit, his pedigree and early promise hinting at a future as a formidable crime-fighting companion.
Hailing from a long lineage of distinguished working dogs, Gavel was one of 40 aspiring pups selected to undergo the intensive training regimen at the police academy. With great excitement, the Queensland community eagerly awaited the day when this talented canine would don the insignia of the esteemed Queensland Police Service and begin his noble career.

And so, in February 2017, Gavel’s destiny took an unexpected turn, as he was officially installed as Queensland’s first-ever Vice-Regal Dog. Adorned in a custom-made ceremonial coat emblazoned with the state’s emblems, Gavel assumed a role that perfectly suited his friendly, affable nature, tasked with welcoming guests, leading tours, and attending formal events – all while radiating an irresistible charm that captivated everyone he encountered.
