A Harrowing Discovery
The person who brought Precious to the shelter explained that the dog had been found hiding in a small dog bed in a local supermarket parking lot.
As the CMHS team began the painstaking process of removing the matted fur, they were met with a heartbreaking reality – the severe tangles had not only prevented the dog from walking but had even forced one of her eyes shut.
Anesthetizing Precious to ensure her comfort, the veterinary staff worked tirelessly for nearly three hours, carefully shaving away the matting that had become home to fleas.
But their efforts revealed an even more troubling discovery – Precious’ overgrown toenails had pierced through her paw pads, leaving her feet severely deformed.

A Glimmer of Hope
When X-rays confirmed that Precious had been suffering in this deplorable condition for an extended period, the prognosis from the Missouri Vet Med team was bleak.
They stated that there were no viable treatment options beyond providing palliative care to keep the dog comfortable. But the kind souls at CMHS refused to give up on Precious.
As soon as her story was shared, Precious found a loving foster home. Her new caretakers showered her with the love and attention she so desperately needed, patiently working with her to help regain her strength.
Slowly but surely, Precious’ fur began to grow back, soft and healthy, and she even gained the ability to sit up on her own.
