Althea’s Heartbreaking Story
Some stories are so gut-wrenching, they leave an indelible mark on our hearts, and Althea’s is undoubtedly one of them. Found wandering the streets of Las Vegas, Nevada, this incredible 7-year-old dog had endured a fate worse than anyone could imagine – a life of unimaginable neglect and starvation that had reduced her once-vibrant body to mere skin and bones.

Thankfully, through the vigilance and compassion of the local community, Althea was given a fighting chance. The good people of the Vegas Pet Rescue Project (VPRP) in Las Vegas immediately sprang into action, taking the emaciated canine under their wing after a nearby shelter alerted them to her plight.

“She’s just skin and bones. She was only 23-24 pounds,” Tina Hayes, a VPRP volunteer, told 8 News Now, her voice laced with disbelief at the appalling state of the once-thriving pup. Althea, who should have weighed a healthy 60 pounds, had been reduced to a mere shadow of her former self, a heartbreaking testament to the cruelty she had endured.
Her story soon captured the attention of news outlets across the country, leaving countless individuals outraged and determined to see justice served for this innocent victim of abuse and neglect.
“Althea is a 7-year-old pitbull who was found on the street barely clinging onto life. It was clear she was starved before she got there,” reported Victoria Saha on her Facebook page, her words a clarion call to the community to rally behind Althea’s cause.

Upon her arrival at the VPRP, Althea’s condition was dire. Suffering from fluid buildup in her abdomen that had caused an obstruction, she also grappled with a heart murmur and a host of other issues stemming from her prolonged starvation. Yet, despite the odds, this courageous pup refused to give up, fighting tooth and nail for every breath and every movement.
Under the round-the-clock care of her devoted caregivers, Althea slowly began to regain her strength, consuming small meals and basking in the love and affection that had been so cruelly denied her. The VPRP community, outraged by the injustice Althea had faced, even offered a substantial reward for any information that could lead to the identification of her abusers, determined to see that justice was served.

Sadly, even the unwavering dedication of Althea’s rescuers was not enough to overcome the ravages of her past. Just days after being found on the streets, this brave girl closed her eyes for the final time, her weak body succumbing to the toll of her harrowing ordeal.
The pain and devastation felt by the VPRP team and their community was palpable, as they bid a heartbreaking farewell to the sweet pup they had grown to love.
“The pain and devastation we feel right now is beyond words. Thank you to all your supporters for their prayers and donations. The whole community fell in love with you just as we did. Your will to live was great but your body was just too tired…We will continue to help other babies all in your name sweetheart,” the rescue wrote in a poignant Facebook post.

Though Althea’s time on this earth was cruelly cut short, her memory will continue to live on, a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering power of compassion.
